By Shari Cedar, Co-founder & CEO of AK Building Services

When I graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in Environmental Studies, my family asked, “What is that? Why would anyone care?” At the time, it was considered a fringe major, something unconventional and idealistic. But a few decades later, I’m thrilled to see how much the world has changed. What once felt niche is now mainstream. Sustainability isn’t just part of the conversation; it’s driving innovation, policy, and business strategy.

Turns out, they care now.

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword in commercial cleaning ... it’s a business imperative. At AK Building Services, I’ve seen firsthand how our industry is evolving to meet the dual demands of environmental responsibility and uncompromising cleanliness. Today, commercial cleaning companies must recognize that green practices and high standards go hand in hand; rather than being mutually exclusive, they are mutually reinforcing.

A Shift in Expectations

Sustainability now sits at the center of client expectations and industry best practices. More and more businesses are seeking cleaning partners who prioritize environmentally responsible solutions. Thanks to innovations by cleaning product manufacturers, this balance is not only possible; it’s effective. Several forces are driving this shift:

  • Environmental Awareness: Clients and communities are more conscious of their environmental footprint.
  • Health and Safety: Green products often reduce exposure to harsh chemicals, promoting safer indoor environments.
  • Cost Efficiency: Sustainable methods are similar in cost, making the decision to invest in green seal products and equipment easier.

Greener Tools for a Cleaner Future

We’re seeing promising innovations that make it easier to clean sustainably while maintaining high standards:

Biodegradable Cleaning Agents

These products replace harsh chemical cleaners with biodegradable alternatives that break down naturally and leave no toxic residues without sacrificing performance.

Microfiber Technology

Microfiber cloths and mops trap dirt and microbes more effectively than traditional tools, reducing the need for excess water and cleaning agents. Their durability also cuts down on waste.

Smart Cleaning Technologies

Robotic cleaners powered by AI and sensors can navigate facilities efficiently, targeting high-traffic zones and optimizing cleaning schedules all while conserving resources.

Sustainable Packaging and Dispenser Systems

Many suppliers are replacing rigid plastic containers with lightweight, multi-layer film pouches that reduce plastic waste and emissions during transport.  Dispenser systems are used to distribute cleaning agents more safely and efficiently.

High Standards, No Compromise

While embracing green practices is essential, cleanliness and safety must remain the top priority. At AK Building Services, we integrate sustainability without lowering our standards by:

  • Using certified green products, including many Green Seal-approved solutions that meet rigorous performance and safety standards.
  • Training our teams on eco-conscious procedures and safe chemical handling.
  • Leveraging smart technologies to optimize resources and reduce waste.
  • Using Green Seal-approved equipment, like HEPA vacuums.

A Culture of Commitment

Sustainability isn’t a one-time shift, rather it's a continuous journey and mindset. It requires commitment, collaboration, and willingness to evolve. That’s why we are building a culture where every team member understands the role they play in reducing our environmental impact. We also believe in transparency. We share our methods, seek client feedback, and constantly look for ways to improve. By aligning with partners who share our values, we’re not just cleaning buildings; we’re helping build healthier, greener workplaces and raising the bar for our industry.
