The James E. Purcell Leadership Award is the most prestigious award presented each year by the Building Service Contractor Association International (BSCAI). Named after the founder and first president of the association, it is given in recognition of long-term service to both the association and the building service contracting industry. The winner of this year’s award is Paul Taylor, President and CEO of ESS Clean, Incorporated, Urbana, Illinois.

Taylor’s journey with BSCAI began 30 years ago when he attended his first annual conference.

I was overwhelmed by the professionalism, size and scope of our association, but it took me about 15 years to really get involved in BSCAI,” says Taylor. “For many years, I attended the events that I could afford to and took back as much information as possible to my team. I was absorbed in my business and raising my kids, and I felt like I did not have time to get involved. I was wrong.”

Utilizing BSCAI alongside growing his business, Taylor initially found the educational sessions most beneficial in providing guidelines for building a company. As the business expanded and Taylor felt more established within the industry, BSCAI’s network of experienced, knowledgeable peers was the thing that took him to the next level.

“The leaders and legends in our industry put their arms around me, helped me to gain the tools I needed, and encouraged me to take on leadership roles,” Taylor says.

He was asked to join the Certification Committee in 2010 and joined the Board of Directors in 2013, where he was heavily involved in modernizing the certification and equity programs. Another former BSCAI President, Philippe D. Mack of BEE Clean Building Maintenance, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, describes Taylor as one of the key board members, helping to share BSCAI’s story across North America.

Paul believes in the efficacy of cleaning, the use of technology, and continuous improvement,” Mack continues. “Paul is an exemplary speaker, a passionate reader, extraordinary business leader, and a great family man.

Taylor attributes his success as a leader to a distinct experience.

“In 2019, I attended the life-changing SmithBucklin Leadership InstituteI learned how to develop the leader in myself and others to benefit my company, BSCAI, and my community.”

On winning the award, Taylor reflects on BSCAI’s support early in his career. He is filled with gratitude for the association and the supportive team that allowed him to give back.

“This industry and this association have provided incredible knowledge and opportunities for me and my family,” he says. “BSCAI invested in me, a small-time, timid business owner trying to make my way in the world and provided me with incredible opportunities to grow and learn.”
