Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI) annually acknowledges a company that addresses and supports the educational development of their organization, creating leaders within the industry. Akin to the founder of the award himself, Adrian “Skip” Marsden, the Skip Marsden Education Excellence Award is given to an association member that values the training and professional growth of their staff. This year, BSCAI recognized MSNW Group, LLC, Ferndale, Washington.

Since 1995, MSNW has provided a diverse range of facility services across the northwest region of the United States. From cleaning across a variety of building types to day porter services, MSNW ensures customer excellence through employee expertise. The company requires its managers to obtain credentials—many members have their Certified Building Service Executive (CBSE) or Registered Building Service Manager (RBSM) BSCAI certifications.

“Training isn’t just part of our process, it’s part of our company identity,” Terell Weg, CEO and President of MSNW, says. “For over 30 years, we’ve built our reputation on the belief that exceptional service begins with well-equipped, confident people.”

In addition to BSCAI certifications, MSNW is recognized through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC), Accredited Snow Contractors Association, National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), and Washington Association of Landscape Professionals (WALP). These credentials demonstrate MSNW’s dedication to training staff, resulting in qualified team members.

Weg shares that MSNW invests time and energy into educational development and growth to procure and promote individual excellence that results in superior client service deliverables.

“By providing thorough and comprehensive training, both online and on-site, we ensure our team members understand their responsibilities, best practices, and safety protocols, while also fostering confidence and personal growth in their field,” she adds. “This investment strengthens our team, supports employee retention, and allows us to consistently exceed client expectations.”

In 2024, MSNW applied these tenets to their janitorial training program. Evolving alongside the cleaning industry, the company decided to restructure their course to improve instruction clarity, employee engagement, and information retention.

“This program, a collaborative effort between our marketing and human resources teams, combines engaging video instruction, interactive learning modules, and short assessments to ensure every team member receives consistent, high-quality training,” Weg says.

The MSNW Janitorial Training Course’s programming provides personnel with updated, step-by-step processes within facilities to optimize their understanding and mastery.

“Each lesson blends practical instruction with visual, hands-on demonstrations to make learning clear, accessible, and memorable,” Weg describes. “This layered approach—combining video, engagement, and evaluation—ensures that training isn’t just watched but truly absorbed.”

On-site, new hires interact directly with their supervisors. They are entreated to one-to-one training that provides them with immediate and specific feedback as they integrate online learning with offline applications.

“Through this comprehensive, multi-dimensional approach to training, MSNW ensures every team member, whether new or experienced, receives the same exceptional foundation,” Weg emphasizes. “The result is a workforce that performs with consistency, safety, and pride across every location we serve.”

This innovative augmentation and application of education demonstrate why MSNW merits this award. By centering their efforts on staff development, MSNW cultivated a culture of professional growth and continued success. Moreover, it aligns with the company’s core values of continuous improvement, a high-standard of excellence, accountability, mutual respect and support, positive “we’ll take care of it” attitude, and servant-hearted stewardship.

For our company, this award symbolizes the collective effort of hundreds of dedicated people who show up each day with excellence and integrity. It’s a reflection of our commitment to invest in our people first—because when our team grows, our company, our clients, and our communities all thrive,” Weg affirms. “It reinforces what we’ve always believed: that the best way to build a strong company is to build strong people.”
