Slotting is the science behind determining where to store individual products in a warehouse to allow for the most efficient picking. Slotting software looks at a map of the warehouse along with the velocity of orders and order mixes entered into a distributor's system and calculates which items are picked most frequently and slots them in the most advantageous position in the warehouse.

Fast-moving items are typically slotted closest to the docking area and into larger spaces to reduce stock-outs and replenishing. Slotting software also helps decrease picking congestion by balancing the placement of high-velocity items across picking zones.

Heavy or oversized items are slotted on lower levels or areas where they can be easily picked with forklifts and other equipment. This way, workers don’t have to bend or reach to pick items, helping to avoid fatigue.
