Ihme — Many distributors are ordering now. Those that get ahead of the game will be prepared once winter hits. This level of preparation includes connecting with end-user customers to make sure they are also properly stocked.
Too often, distributors wait until the first storm to think about inventory just to discover that they are not prepared. If there is a storm and distribution isn’t stocked, they miss the opportunity. They also open themselves up to losing the client to competing distributors in the future. End users have options. They may not have sought out new suppliers had their own distributor been equipped for the season.
Gedi — The most successful winter programs begin long before the first snow event appears in the forecast. From a supply chain perspective, distributors should begin evaluating winter demand and work with manufacturing partners throughout the summer to establish inventory targets, replenishment plans, and customer forecasts.
Key indicators include customer growth trends, manufacturer lead times, and seasonal weather outlooks. However, weather forecasts should only be one component of the planning process. Winter weather has become increasingly volatile, and the ability to respond quickly often matters more than accurately predicting snowfall totals months in advance.
Early planning also creates opportunities to engage customers in meaningful winter preparedness discussions. Distributors that initiate those conversations early often secure larger preseason commitments and strengthen customer relationships before demand intensifies.

That’s why it is important to deal with an ice melt manufacturer that will do drop shipments on behalf of the distributor.
Gedi — Accurate forecasting begins with understanding how customers use deicing products rather than simply reviewing prior-year purchases.
Different customer segments have very different operational requirements. Healthcare facilities, schools, municipalities, retail centers, and logistics facilities all face unique safety, liability, and operational challenges during winter weather events. A hospital entrance, for example, requires a very different winter maintenance strategy than an industrial loading dock.

Again, we are talking about a seasonal product and most distribution will order as needed. They don’t have the ability to stock hundreds of truckloads in their warehouse or shipping yard.
Gedi — The strongest forecasts combine historical sales data, customer behavior, and weather-related metrics. Distributors should analyze at least three to five years of sales history, including average order frequency, seasonal volume trends, customer retention rates, account growth, emergency purchases, inventory carryover, and regional weather activity.
One particularly valuable metric is emergency ordering behavior. Customers that consistently place last-minute orders often reveal gaps in forecasting or inventory planning. These situations create opportunities for distributors to improve customer preparedness and strengthen long-term relationships.
From a market perspective, distributors should also monitor changes in customer purchasing priorities. Many organizations are placing greater emphasis on facility preservation, environmental stewardship, and risk management than they did a decade ago. Ihme — I would have the distributor ask their customer how much ice melt they could have sold the previous season if it was readily available. If the answer is "more," I would suggest they invest in more inventory early to avoid being out or scrambling to find other sources. This will also address whether the distributor was a good partner with supply during the season for their customer.
Gedi — Many distributors focus on how much product a customer used last year, which is important, but that's only part of the conversation. The better approach is understanding the property itself and what the customer is trying to accomplish during the winter season.
Some of the questions we recommend include:

- Were there any periods when inventory ran low?
- What areas need to be treated?
- What level of service is expected during storms?

- Are there metal railings, handrails, or other exposed metal surfaces?

One mistake we see fairly often is focusing solely on melting performance or purchase price. Those factors are certainly important, but they don't tell the whole story. Many facility managers today are also evaluating how a deicer may affect concrete surfaces, metal infrastructure, surrounding vegetation, floor maintenance, and overall property upkeep throughout the season.
