The World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World Hand Hygiene Day to promote the global importance of healthy handwashing habits. The day recognizes hand hygiene as a key element in an effective infection prevention and control program.
Commercial cleaning industry experts recognize that hand hygiene is essential to the foundation of a quality cleaning system. Handwashing mitigates the spread of diseases, lessens the risk of contracting illnesses, and can reduce school and worker absenteeism. However, a critical challenge in any hand hygiene regimen is public buy-in and consistency.
Bradley Company’s 2026 Healthy Handwashing Survey revealed the importance of public pressure in adhering to handwashing habits. Around 93 percent of respondents recognized the importance of handwashing to maintain overall health, yet one in five admit they are likely to skip this step when alone. With various outbreaks impacting Americans nationwide—influenza, measles, and more—hand hygiene serves as a proven method to protect the public.
Beyond public perceptions of handwashing, hand hygiene products also impact public participation. Building occupants prefer foam hand soap as it aligns with their texture preferences and contains the same health benefits as gel soap. Additionally, touchless soap dispensers are favored over their manual counterparts. When individuals have access to their preferred handwashing methods, they are more likely to engage in the practice.
Frontline staff can lead the charge by setting an example. Hand hygiene compliance starts with education. By communicating with staff on the necessity of handwashing, healthy habits are built and reinforced. Moreover, ensuring restroom facilities are well-stocked will increase handwashing accessibility by ensuring each user has the tools they need to wash their hands.
