The janitors who care for buildings in the St. Louis area have earned a new contract for their work after a few weeks of negotiation.

SEIU Local 1 reached a three year deal with Contract Cleaners Association to keep 2,100 janitors working in some of St. Louis' most prominent buildings, reports St. Louis Business Journal. Contract Cleaners Association represents 4M Building Solutions, Clean-Tech and other commercial cleaning companies.

The new deal will give the workers a 14 percent pay increase from the previous contract, which was set at $10.75 an hour. The workers will also get paid sick days and more vacation time.

While the janitors in St. Louis never did strike, they did protest. A civil disobedience protest was held in January that lead to the arrest of one city alderwoman.
