When I started in this industry 20 years ago, my annual travel agenda took me to only a small handful of industry events. Today, it seems there is an event every week. Large or small, in-person or virtual — there is an option for everyone. Some are product oriented while others focus on professional growth. Some are purely for networking and others offer hands-on training.
This evolution of industry events has tens of thousands of jan/san professionals bouncing around the country in search of opportunities. Whether traveling alone or with a team, there are plenty of takeaways for both seasoned professionals and those new to the industry. It just takes some organization and pre-planning to maximize the event experience.
My strategy, as a somewhat seasoned attendee, is to sit quietly and absorb the conversation. One thing I've learned is that both challenges and industry trends tend to flow in waves, repeating themselves as time goes on. The difference is nothing is exactly the same and new perspectives and evolving technologies offer improved solutions in both products and processes.
Of course, those who know me know I can't stay quiet too long, which is why I love the networking opportunities events present. Chatting with peers can open doors to collaborations and potential business partnerships.
In an industry that is built and sustained on strong relationships, opportunities to network with industry leaders, potential clients, and like-minded peers are crucial. These face-to-face interactions foster trust and open doors. In fact, many of these conversations have become the basis for future article ideas in Sanitary Maintenance.
Industry events are an opportunity to witness innovation, hone leadership skills, attend workshops, or explore new business opportunities. But a less tangible benefit can actually deliver the strongest results — these events boost motivation and morale.
Speaking from personal experience, I believe that surrounding oneself with motivated and inspiring peers can reignite a person's passion for the job. Events offer an opportunity to break away from the daily grind each and every one of us face. We’re able to connect with enthusiastic and driven professionals and return with a renewed sense of purpose.
Our team at Sanitary Maintenance is looking forward to some big events coming up. Stop and see us in Las Vegas at the ISSA Show in November. We'll also be attending Interclean Amsterdam in April 2026 to learn about the international jan/san market. We look forward to making the most of these events with you.
