In addition to spotlighting infection control benefits, manufacturers recommend distributors focus on how electrostatic machines can help customers reduce labor costs.

“With the electrostatic sprayer, you’re able to cover surface area very quickly and effectively, which is incredibly difficult to do with traditional manual cleaning and would take a lot of hours, effort and chemistry,” says Lestage. 

For example, Earthsafe Chemical Alternative’s systems have demonstrated an 80 percent reduction in the time it takes to properly disinfect a space using electrostatic spraying compared to conventional methods, says Gray.

“It allows people to do so much more than they’re currently capable of doing, which I think is the most impactful thing about electrostatics,” says Gray.

Most importantly, electrostatic sprayers allow users to apply chemicals in a more efficient, controlled manner, thereby eliminating the danger of chemicals being overused or improperly applied. 

“There are so many opportunities for people to make mistakes, cut corners, or not use the chemicals properly, rendering them useless or creating false confidence that a surface was disinfected when it wasn’t,” says Gray. “With the electrostatics, there’s no need to mix solutions or pour liquid bleach into the water and hope you get the right concentration. You simply grab a tablet, drop it into the container with tap water, and let it dissolve.”

Manufacturers affirm that users with little to no experience can operate electrostatic systems and achieve the same outcome as a seasoned janitor. 

“The ‘wrap’ happens whether someone’s been specially trained to use an electrostatic system or not,” says Gray.

Additionally, custodians can adjust the particle size of the spray to create a fine mist suitable for use on electronic equipment that is often overlooked, such as phones and keyboards.

 “You get a much more even coating than you would with a standard trigger sprayer, and you’re not over-saturating the surface,” says Velez. “So you don’t have to worry about liquid pooling, which can potentially cause damage when you use a trigger spray.”
