A head full of thoughts, fear, chaos, problems to solve. A swirl of emotions. Mental health concept.

A mental health report revealed that providing workplace benefits cannot be a standalone support.

The State of Workforce Mental Health survey found that mental health struggles continue to challenge staff and impact labor output. One factor contributing to additive pressures is the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in global operations. A little less than half of respondents (44 percent) feel as though AI integration can lead to job loss. As a result, 46 percent of employees believe they need to perform perfectly, which can lead to additional anxiety. In combination with other stressors—financial needs and growing workplace demands—these worries are contributing to broader disengagement.

Yet, there is another side to this coin. While AI can contribute to greater mental health concerns, it can also provide a solution. Effective implementation of digital tools and automation has supported employee productivity (48 percent) and work-life balance (43 percent). Key to such success is an onboarding process that clearly outlines expectations and allows for feedback.

While the survey reported heavily on employee mental strain, managers are not immune. Over half (54 percent) shared that their leadership position has adversely affected their mental health, and 48 percent have almost left their position because of it. Those in charge are facing staffing shortages, shrinking budgets, and geopolitical supply chain disruptions that are taking their toll. However, these challenges have resulted in 96 percent of managers reinforcing mental health as a workplace priority.

Overall, industry members are embracing mental health benefits as a priority to promote personnel health and wellness, as well as optimize operational output. According to the report, 68 percent of people have seen greater use of mental health benefits and demand, with 65 percent witnessing a trend in increased mental health-related leave. To thrive, workplaces can design mental health care systems that adequately address pain points while providing sustainable support.
