The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to terminate temporary immigration protections reignites workforce worries nationwide.
A recent ruling in Mullin v. Doe ended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a program designed to provide temporary humanitarian relief to Haitian and Syrian immigrants who cannot immediately return to their countries of origin. The result could cause an estimated 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians to lose their work authorizations, adding additional labor challenges to commercial cleaning operations. The greatest impact these mass deportations may have is on the healthcare industry, particularly long-term care facilities.
According to a 2025 study, 5 percent of the healthcare workforce consists of noncitizens. Of the 20.1 million healthcare workers in the U.S., 8.9 percent of housekeeper and janitorial positions are occupied by undocumented immigrants. Compounded by a stagnant labor pool and ongoing staffing recruitment and retention challenges, the loss of these employees will further disrupt operational efficiency.
Although the Trump Administration maintains that these deportations will free up jobs for Americans and reduce foreign competition, research found that rather than create job opportunities, this decision may add to the growing number of unfilled vacancies. Staffing shortages add pressure on professional cleaning companies tasked with fulfilling cleaning contracts with less people. This constant workforce turnover impacts cleaning consistency and quality, which can compromise facility health and safety.
Growing fears of unemployment and forced deportation can also affect the well-being of current cleaning crews. Fearful employees can add to employee absences, as individuals may choose to stay home for fear of immigration raids or audits. Facility operations can protect their workers by understanding workplace rights and ensuring compliance through organized documentation.
