The Center for Green Schools, in partnership with ASHRAE, has released a newly updated school indoor air quality (IAQ) fact sheet series. These concise resources are designed for school staff and decision-makers without a technical background to help them make informed choices about IAQ. With expert input from across the country, the series has been updated to reflect the latest guidance on school IAQ strategies.
The series includes two brand-new fact sheets on IAQ monitoring and wildfire response, as well as updated resources covering ventilation, HVAC filtration, germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) systems, in-room air cleaners, electronic air cleaners and disinfectants. Individual fact sheets include the following:
Series Overview
Build a foundational understanding of IAQ standards and guidelines for schools and learn the strategies to achieve them.
Ventilation
Learn how a building’s system type informs the ventilation and air-cleaning strategies that one should consider for that space.
HVAC Filtration
Understand how HVAC filtration works, what makes a filter effective and how to ensure that a filter is compatible with a system.
In-Room Air Cleaners
Explore how to select, use and maintain in-room air cleaners that actually improve IAQ in classrooms.
GUV
Learn about the most common types of GUV systems, when and where they are appropriate in schools, and how to assess their effectiveness.
Electronic Air Cleaners
Understand electronic air-cleaner technologies, how these air cleaners work, what potential health concerns exist and what to consider when exploring alternatives.
Disinfectants
Learn about safer disinfectants, when they are recommended and what precautions to take while using them.
IAQ Monitoring
Discover what to measure, why it matters and the benefits of continuous monitoring.
IAQ During Wildfires
Plan ahead for smoke events with actionable guidance to reduce pollutant exposure and protect occupant health before, during and after a wildfire.
