Someone washing their hands

SC Johnson Professional, a total solutions provider for industrial, institutional and healthcare users, has released a handwashing how-to video to celebrate the upcoming Global Handwashing Day.

The 59-second video features step-by-step instructions on proper techniques for effective handwashing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), handwashing education can help communities stay healthy by:

1. Reducing the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by 23-40 percent

2. Reducing diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58 percent

3. Reducing respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21 percent

4. Reducing absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illness in schoolchildren by 29-57 percent

Held every year on Oct. 15, Global Handwashing Day was developed to encourage people to wash their hands with soap and water properly when needed. The event first took place in 2008 and involved 120 million child handwashers from more than 70 countries, according to the event website. Since then, groups and individuals have come together to provide handwashing education and build sinks.
