Outsourcing in Newport Beach, Calif., will save the city more than $140,000 a year, according to a city staff report. The City Council recently approved a contract with a large building service contractor, which will soon take over cleaning 26 public restrooms in Newport.
Public restrooms in the city have been maintained by a patchwork of city employees and three contractors at a cost of $324,000 a year, according to the staff report. Three city maintenance worker positions are being eliminated as a result of the new contract and annual savings under the new arrangement are expected to be about $143,000, the report said.
City officials have said they will consider contracting out for more services as they look for ways to further reduce city spending.
