The U.S. government shutdown on Wednesday, which will impact office occupancy in federal offices for the time being.
The shutdown occurs after the President Donald Trump and Congress failed to reach an agreement to keep the government running. The failed agreement is caused by a deadlock in Congress regarding Democratic demands on healthcare, according to the Associated Press.
In response to the shutdown, The State Department released a revised guidance on how government employees will be impacted. The department said over 16,800 dire-hire U.S.-based employees will not be subject to furlough. Before the revised guidance, 10,344 of these employees were identified as exempt.
The revised shutdown plan estimates the total of U.S.-based direct-hire employees to be 27,300. This means over 10,000 department employees will be furloughed during the shutdown.
