Hilton Hotels approved the use of a synthetic carpet cushion made from 90% post-consumer carpet fibers for use in their hotels nationwide. The increasing use of post-consumer carpet cushion will have a significant impact on the overall diversion of post- consumer carpet from our nation's landfills. Ronald J. Greitzer, President of Reliance Carpet Cushion/Los Angeles Fiber, said, "The answer to recycling waste carpet is to develop the demand for products with post-consumer content. If every hotel started to use synthetic cushion manufactured from post-consumer carpet fibers instead of post-industrial virgin fibers or imported rebond foam, then carpet recycling would become a successful industry."
Hilton Hotel's dedication to environmental sustainability and their willingness to think outside the box pertaining carpet recycling should be applauded. "Hilton's approval of post-consumer carpet cushion is a very large step for the carpet recycling industry. If other organizations and government entities agreed to take similar actions to procure materials made from post-consumer carpet and recycle their old carpet, the 5 billion pounds of old carpet that goes into our landfills each year would significantly be reduced," explains Frank Hurd, Chairman of the Carpet America Recovery Effort.
