A drug-resistant fungus is quickly spreading through the hospitals of America’s second most populated state.
An estimated 727 of the over 2,800 Candida auris cases in the United States for 2025 have occurred in Texas, according to Scripps News, citing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.
Candida auris is especially harmful to people with compromised immune systems and those living in long-term care facilities, which are certainly worked by the commercial cleaning industry. In addition to its impact on the vulnerable, candida auris is especially damning because it is both hard to treat and contain. It survives on surfaces and, in the medical setting, spreads through contaminated equipment, demonstrating the importance of strong cleaning practices and procedures.
While experts say Candida auris isn’t of concern to the general public, those cleaning healthcare and long-term care facilities should remain vigilant.
