A report about bed bugs found a rise in reported infestations across southern states. Bed bug cases typically emerge in the spring and are significant during the summer months, likely due to increased vacations. Travel combined with a lack of pest control protocols can lead to these unwanted hitchhikers.
Overall, the annual study shows steady growth in contracted bug control services. Drawing upon this data, the top 50 states with bed bug cases were identified. Ranked by the number of treatments implemented, the majority of cities listed are located in the South.
Two of the states within the top five—Texas and Florida—are indicative of regional trends contributing to these pests. Bed bugs thrive in warmer climates and can spread quickly through tourist traffic. The top city was Philadelphia, followed by New York and Cleveland-Akron. All three cities were featured in the 2025 report, indicating recurring struggles in pest control and management.
Cleaning is a crucial preventative measure to mitigate bed bugs. Using extreme temperatures—hot or cold—alongside equipment can eliminate bed bugs and their eggs. Chemical treatments can also be utilized; however, pesticide immunity can limit their efficacy. For facilities that maintain mattresses, using a mattress cover can add a protective barrier and extend their lifespan.
Training frontline teams to identify bed bugs can also tackle infestations before they require costly solutions. By carefully examining the seams, crevices, and cracks in bedding, furniture, carpets, and walls, staff could help contain this pest problem.
