Many believe the hardest part of a race is reaching the finish line first. After all, getting to No. 1 requires grit, determination, and relentless effort. But the truth is, holding that position is often even tougher.
There’s always someone pushing to be faster, smarter, and stronger. Success demands that you anticipate challengers, stay a step ahead, and consistently deliver better results — quicker than the competition. But once you've overcome that contender, don't be surprised to find that another is waiting for their shot at the title. In the race to the top, staying focused is what sets true leaders apart.
That’s exactly the challenge faced by the department featured in our cover story. The Environmental Services team at Aurora Medical Center Sheboygan County (AMCSC) always had the makings of a top-tier department. Their base started with the right team members, each knowing their role, complemented by perfect coaches to motivate. Add in their thoughtful goals with a plan and strategy to achieve them, plus pure determination to make it happen.
Altogether, it’s no surprise this EVS team was recognized as a "2025 Environmental Services Department of the Year" by the Association for the Health Care Environment (AHE). In the article, they share some of what got them there — a clear and ambitious goal; a staffing philosophy that emphasized education, retention, and empowerment; strong communication and a team mentality; and so much more.
The leaders at AMCSC are tried and true, and theirs is a program not only deserving of the recognition, but worth emulating. Cue the competition.
Personally, I believe that competition makes us better and naturally elevates the industry as a whole. The race to the top doesn't stop at the finish line and AMCSC will soon have other departments nipping at their heels for this best-in-class title. It'll be fun to see who steps up to the starting block next.
