Last month I attended Interclean Amsterdam, the largest cleaning industry event in the world, drawing 30,000 attendees and 850 exhibitors from 140 countries. The value of an event this size is the diversity of both manufacturers and attendees. I saw many new products not yet available in the United States, as well as heard creative, outside-the-box ideas that U.S. contractors may not typically consider. Each conversation presented a slightly different view of where the industry is headed.
Even though few building service contractors service countries outside the United States—and the majority only focus on their local city, state or region – they still should pay close attention to global trends because the forces shaping contract cleaning are rarely confined to one area. Shifts in supply chains, labor challenges, regulations, and customer expectations often begin in one part of the world and quickly influence how companies operate everywhere else.
By monitoring these global developments early, building service contractors can anticipate disruption rather than react to it, allowing them to protect profitability, avoid costly surprises, and make smarter long-term decisions around sourcing, pricing, technology, and growth strategy.
Global trends also create opportunities for innovation and competitive advantages. Emerging technologies, sustainability initiatives, and changing customer behaviors often reveal new products, services, and business models that can be adapted before competitors catch up. Leaders who understand where this industry is headed globally are better positioned to identify new partnerships, expand into untapped markets, and meet evolving customer demands.
Interclean Amsterdam won't be back again until 2028, but BSCs interested in learning more from global partners won't have to wait that long. This November, Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI) invited the World Federation of Building Service Contractors (WFBSC) to join their Contracting Success event in Las Vegas. This creates a timely opportunity for contractors to explore the global trends shaping commercial cleaning and the strategies needed to stay ahead.
