A small “step of faith” was the catalyst for Tiffany Spelman’s present success. Spelman, Founder and CEO of FlowerHill Facility Services in North Richland Hills, Texas, was introduced to the commercial cleaning industry when she reached out and expressed interest in cleaning her husband’s company’s office space. From this initial contract came the building service contractor providing various facilities with consistent and hygienic spaces today.
“Commercial cleaning is essential. Every business relies on safe, well-maintained spaces,” says Spelman. “The pivotal moment for me was realizing that this wasn’t just a side opportunity, it could become a sustainable business built on service, excellence, and long-term relationships.”
The foundation of these relationships is based on the company’s core values. Spelman leads with integrity, instills inclusivity, and maintains a “servant leader mindset.” These tenets elevate the services frontline staff supply, many of whom have worked with the business since its start. The longevity of staff in an industry with high turnover lends itself to the company’s culture.
“Because of that culture, we still clean for our very first client and have been able to grow through strong, lasting relationships,” Spelman shares. “Consistency and trust have been the real tangible value.”
As the cleaning industry continues to transform, the plan for FlowerHill is to grow through innovation. The vision is that the application of digital tools—from software to robotics—can offer benefits for both employees and clients by enhancing operations. Instead of replacing staff, technology allocates tasks to ensure reliable and consistent levels of clean.
“Thoughtful integration of technology will allow companies like ours to improve efficiency while delivering even greater value to clients,” notes Spelman.
Structural support, such as involvement in industry organizations and the development of partnerships, also provides future avenues for leadership growth. When prospective leaders capitalize on what is available to them, they build momentum toward their future. Spelman says her hope is for female building service contractors to be empowered to take that first step.
“The more women who volunteer for pivotal roles and pursue certifications, the more we normalize female leadership,” she shares. “This industry offers more opportunity than many people realize, and I believe the next generation of women can shape it in powerful ways.”
Although there’s always room for improvement in the industry, commercial cleaning is a space where one can start small and become something substantial. The enterprise is reliant upon entrepreneurship, creating an environment where anyone with drive and determination—especially women—can find success. Spelman showcases this through her humble origins cleaning office spaces to her present success as an executive of a commercial cleaning business.
“It’s not always easy work, but it’s meaningful work,” says Spelman. “For women who are willing to lead with courage and commitment, the growth potential is absolutely there.”
