BSCAI members celebrate the association's 50th anniversary
BSCAI members celebrate the association's 50th anniversary in 2015.

When the National Association of Building Service Contractors (NABSC) was founded in 1965, its goal was to help solve “common problems of contract cleaning management” and “enable its members to conduct their businesses with the greatest economy and efficiency, and secure an adequate profit on their services.” For 60 years, BSCAI has offered new benefits or continually improved existing ones, but it has always lived up to that original mission — even today.

For example, since 2010, the association introduced the Purchase Advantage Program, offered through National Service Alliance (NSA), which would allow BSCs of all sizes to realize significant savings on products. The association’s prestigious award program also received a makeover and was rebranded as the CLEAN Awards to draw more attention to the caliber of experts within the industry. Four additional awards were added to the program: New Member of the Year (2014); Skip Marsden Award for Educational Excellence (2015); Cleaning for Health (2017); and Contracting Profits Emerging Leader (2019).

Meanwhile, BSCAI continued to focus heavily on education. Starting in 2015, the CBSE and RBSM certification exams could be taken online, a much more convenient option for members. The four-part Bidding and Estimating course also went online in 2018. And the 2020 pandemic introduced both the COVID-19 Disinfection and Safety course, and the online Training Academy, which became the home for Virtual Summits on operations, finance, sales, human resources, and more.

BSCAI has made significant strides since 2010, but 2015 proved to be a particularly notable year. When Paul Greenland, partner with Ikigai Management Consulting, was sworn in as the 2015 president of BSCAI, he became the first in a line of second-generation leaders: followed by Jim Harris, Jr. (Janitronics, Inc., 2018), Michael Diamond (AffinEco, LLC dba Pritchard Industries, 2019), and Eric Luke (Three Sixty Seven Advisors, 2021), all of whom also succeeded their fathers as presidents of the association.

Greenland’s presidency was flush with big events, the first of which was BSCAI's 50th anniversary. The Annual Convention (later renamed Contracting Success Conference in 2018) held in the fall of 2015 included a celebration that properly recognized the milestone. It was here that Greenland also announced a new partnership — after roughly 30 years of membership, Contracting Profits magazine was named as the official publication and media partner of BSCAI.
