Balance Infection Control with Sustainable Cleaning Practices

By Corinne Zudonyi, Editor-in-Chief

The cleaning industry has undergone significant evolution since the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting focus from hygiene theater to smarter, more sustainable cleaning practices.

In this "Show Central" conversation from Clean Buildings Conference — a co-located event with NFMT — Keith Schneringer, Senior Director of Marketing JanSan + Sustainability at BradyPLUS, discussed with Corinne Zudonyi, chief editor for the commercial cleaning market, how cleaning professionals can better support occupant health without sacrificing environmental responsibility.

During the height of the pandemic, many organizations prioritized visible disinfection efforts, often overusing chemicals in a bid to reassure building occupants. However, indiscriminate disinfectant use not only increased chemical exposure risks but also shifted attention away from green cleaning strategies that protect health holistically.

Today, cleaning teams are encouraged to adopt a “four-dimensional” approach: prioritizing hand hygiene, cleaning high-touch surfaces, maintaining clean floors, and improving indoor air quality. Floor care has become a major focus, with proper maintenance reducing particulates that could otherwise circulate through HVAC systems and impact indoor air quality.

Vacuuming with Carpet and Rug Institute-certified equipment, using autoscrubbers instead of mops, and integrating low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) cleaning products all contribute to healthier environments. Strong entrance matting programs also play a preventive role, trapping dirt and debris before they enter a facility.

In addition, awareness of the chemicals used is more important than ever. Selecting products certified by Green Seal, EPA Safer Choice, or Clean Air Choice ensures reduced respiratory irritants and healthier workspaces.

The industry’s future lies in balancing effective infection control with sustainable cleaning practices. Cleaning professionals have a unique opportunity to drive health outcomes not just through surface hygiene but by contributing directly to better indoor air quality and smarter resource use.
