Green: Using Knowledge Power
When it comes to sustainability, knowledge is power…if you know how to use it.
For instance, “dashboard” systems are available that help facility managers monitor how much energy and water they are using to operate their facilities. However, many of these systems do not go the next step, suggesting ways to reduce consumption, a facility’s environmental impact and carbon footprint.
The exception is the Sustainability Dashboard, a Web-based tool developed by Sustainability Dashboard Tools, LLC, which helps cleaning professionals, building owners/managers, green and sustainability advocates, unions, and others find this information and then use it so that they can become more environmentally responsible and sustainable.
“What is really exciting about the ‘Tool’ [is the improvement information] it provides,” says Sheila Sheridan, past chair of the International Facility Management Association. “Now, even the novice facility manager can implement changes that positively impact the environment and save money.”
