Restroom Care: Winning The Game Of Cleaning
Made-up of 3,500 tons of steel, 41,000 cubic yards of concrete, 1,850 doors, 6,500 parking spaces, eight escalators, nine elevators and 50 restrooms, Chicago’s United Center is huge.
Since 1994, the United Center has been the home of the Chicago Blackhawks and Bulls. Each year, millions visit the Center to see more than 200 events, from ball games to Cher.
However, due to all the heavy traffic and various events, the building does take a beating. In fact, as much as 10 tons of garbage is collected at the end of all the Blackhawks games alone.
One custodian could easily spend two to three hours cleaning the large floor areas and more than 30 fixtures found in each restroom after a busy night. That simply is not financially feasible and such labor-intensive work means the quality may vary.
Still, the United Center is considered one of the country’s top five cleanest arenas. How do they do it?
When it comes to cleaning their restrooms, the United Center uses Kaivac’s No-Touch Cleaning™ system.
With the Kaivac No-Touch system, cleaning solution is applied to fixtures, mirrors, and metal areas, then allowed to dwell. High-pressure rinsing blasts away soils and contaminants. Using a squeegee for the mirrors — if necessary — helps remove all remaining rinse water. The floors are then vacuumed dry, completely removing soils and moisture along with disease- and odor-causing bacteria.
“We get the work done fast using the KaiVac,” says Kenneth Bell, the Center’s Director of Sanitation. “And just as important, our restrooms are clean, top to bottom. I can’t help the Blackhawks or Bulls win their games, but the KaiVac sure helps us win our game — the game of cleaning.”
