Waterless Urinals: Cleaning Not An Issue

The Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston was experimenting with ways to reduce water consumption. One of the most obvious solutions was to install waterless urinals. It is estimated a typical urinal uses as much as 40,000 gallons of water annually.

But there were concerns regarding no-water systems, and one of the biggest was cleaning. The manufacturer they selected, Waterless Co LLC, told them that a waterless system actually requires less cleaning than a conventional urinal.

Because the interior of the urinal stays dry, there is less chance for the development of bacteria or water spots that must be scrubbed to be removed. The school’s custodial crew was told to just wipe the urinal clean using an all-purpose-type cleaner.

Once installed, the cleaning crew agreed and found the Waterless systems very easy to maintain, according to school administrators. Additionally, there were no odor problems, another concern. In fact, some users said that the restrooms smelled better after the installation,
