Restroom Care: The “Healthy” Little Surprise
The Environmental Services Department (ESD) of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to sanitation and protecting the health of its patients, staff, and visitors.
In September 2007, the department proved this once again by contracting with Brian Moriarty of Cannon Hygiene New England to have touchless feminine-hygiene-disposal units installed and serviced in the hospital’s restrooms.
“Conventional disposal units can become coated with germs and bacteria,” says Moriarty. “Cleaning professionals are often unaware of how important it is to clean these [disposal] units carefully. When they are touched, by users or cleaners, they can spread contaminants to other surfaces and other people.”
According to Maria Detres-Rievera, with ESD, feedback regarding the touchless units has been positive: “We received so many requests for the units that we installed them in other areas of the hospital. They help keep our hospital healthy.”
