Waterless Urinals: Oohs and Aahs and Savings

Company Website

Dudley H. Davis Center, the new student union building at the University of Vermont, routinely elicits oohs and aahs.

The center is the first student union in the country to receive LEED Gold designation from the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizing buildings for exemplary environmental design and construction.

Among the facility’s sustainable hallmarks:
• It is expected to use 50 percent less energy than a similarly sized traditional facility.
• Sixty-three percent of the construction materials used to build the facility were manufactured or sourced within 500 miles of the site.
• There are 175 strategically placed sensors constantly monitoring energy and water use.
• Waterless urinals from Waterless Co. are helping to reduce water use by an estimated 41 percent.

The university’s goal is for all new facilities to achieve basic LEED certification. Installing waterless urinals helped the union exceed that goal, winning the top-level Gold designation.
