Restroom Care: Science and Technology Museum LEED Certified and Waterless
The Reuben
H. Fleet Science Center is San Diego’s only museum dedicated to science and
technology.
In
the past 10 years, the center has worked to reduce the amount of energy and,
because water is such a precious commodity in California, water used in the
building.
This
all paid off earlier this year when the center received LEED Silver
Certification for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance.
The
center received kudos for its rooftop solar panels. “The installation generates
enough energy to power the museum and about 65 homes,” says a center
spokesperson.
As
to reducing water consumption, automated water faucets are installed, all
toilets have been replaced with low-flow systems, and urinals in the building
are all waterless, manufactured by Waterless
Co, Inc.
Because
of the waterless urinals alone, saving up to 450,000 gallons of water per
year,” adds the spokesperson, “helping us earn three LEED credits."
