A majority of Americans would prefer just one certification seal for green products, as indicated by a national survey of more than 1,000 people. Two-thirds, or 65 percent, of Americans say having one seal for all green products would give them more confidence when purchasing, and 41 percent of respondents prefer third-party certification systems to other certifying entities such as the Federal Trade Commission or the industry itself. The research, released by EnviroMedia Social Marketing, comes as the FTC closed the public comment period for its Green Guides on Dec. 10. The Guides are intended to prevent marketers from making misleading environmental claims. "There are more than 350 labels or seals of approval that offer to help consumers know whether a product is green or healthy, which is classic information overload for the consumer," Kevin Tuerff, co-founder of EnviroMedia. "Having one comprehensive national seal to identify the best green products would limit consumer confusion and also hold advertisers accountable to one set of standards."
