Custodians that were laid off four years ago and replaced by non-union workers have been asked to return to Portland Public Schools. At the time of the layoffs, the district was confronted by the Service Employees International Union and eventually brought the issue to the Oregon Supreme Court, which ruled that the district violated state law.
If all the laid-off workers return to work, the district could add a $10 million increase the custodial budget, in addition to the back pay the workers are entitled to.
