Alan S. Bigger, currently director of building services at the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind. was inducted as president of APPA on July 15, 2007 during APPA’s annual conference in Baltimore, Maryland. APPA is the association of choice serving educational facilities professionals, representing more than 1,500 learning institutions encompassing over 4,700 individuals throughout the United States, Canada, and  internationally.  

“To lead an organization such as APPA, one must be a passionate and dedicated volunteer, and this association has afforded me the opportunity to put my passion into practice.” said Bigger. “I am totally committed to strengthening and demonstrating the three major pillars of APPA's strategic plan—credibility, competency, and collaboration. I am eager for the opportunity to serve APPA's members and to put the plan into action.”
 
Effective September 16, 2007 Bigger will be taking the position of Director of Facilities at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. An active member of APPA for over 20 years, Bigger recently served the association as President-Elect. During the past year, he visited Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand on behalf of APPA’s initiative to enhance international connections. Bigger has also served APPA as Vice President for Professional Affairs for over three years, where he worked to improve and enhance APPA’s institutional and individual awards and recognition program and Facilities Management Evaluation Program (FMEP). Bigger has worked diligently to build APPA’s code advocacy initiative involving strategic partnerships with affiliated national associations and code-making bodies.
 
Bigger has spoken at numerous regional and international meetings of APPA and at Midwest APPA (MAPPA) meetings. He has served two terms on the Technical Advisory Committee of the International Executive Housekeepers’ Association (IEHA) and as voluntary faculty advisor to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for the Teleconference Network of Texas, facilities management series for over four years.
 
Bigger has a varied background in training, management and human relations accumulated through his professional experiences at the University of Missouri, the South Texas Hospital and in the United States Air Force. He has published more than 300 articles in trade journals including APPA’s Facilities Manager and has contributed to two books, Hazardous Materials and Solid Waste Management and Custodial Staffing Guidelines.
 
Bigger has been recognized with numerous awards including the Notre Dame President’s Award, APPA’s Meritorious Service Award by APPA, the IEHA William D. Joyner Special Achievement Award, and the MAPPA President’s Award. Bigger was named 2004 Person of the Year by Cleaning Maintenance and Management.
 
Beyond his work with APPA, Bigger has served on various boards including the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce (Leadership Board) and the United Way of St. Joseph County Funding Panel. Outside the business sector, Bigger has served as a church trustee, a deacon, chair of deacons, Sunday School teacher, group leader, and lay preacher.
 
APPA’s board leadership structure is constructed to create and preserve continuity across terms. Therefore, Bigger will serve on the APPA presidential team for three years: 2006-07 as President-Elect, 2007-08 as President, and 2008-09 as Immediate Past President.
