Edmonton's (Alberta, Canada) public schools have been asked by its janitors union to upgrade their cleaning products to green, less toxic, products. According to CBC News, the custodial union made a pitch for greener products to be implemented at all public schools in the area.

Janitors see the push for green chemicals as the first step in greening the schools. They are using this as a stepping-stone for other green initiatives such as recycling and teaching children about the environment.

The area has 204 schools and janitors stress that the traditional products can still be used regularly in areas such as restrooms, according to the article. They stress that the switch to greener chemicals will create minimal cost increases and both parents and students are also on board.
