Immigration enforcement raids may be suspended during the 2010 census, if the U.S. Census Bureau has its way. The bureau wants raids halted so the government can better count the numbers of illegal immigrants — a group included in the population count.

A Census Bureau official voiced fears that raids during the census would make illegal immigrants less likely to cooperate with government workers who are supposed to include them.

The issue comes up as the U.S. deals with an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, and in the wake of failed immigration reform by Congress.
