The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) won an award for a press release promoting the results of a 2007 public handwashing observational study. The groups received the Best Press Release award during PR News' 2008 Non-Profit PR Awards Dec. 4 at a National Press Club luncheon in Washington, D.C. SDA's PR agency, Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, also shared in the honor.

Distribution of the press release and coverage of SDA and ASM's joint press conference led to hundreds of stories around world, including features and/or mentions by the Associated Press, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, WebMD, Good Morning America, and CNN, among many other outlets.
 
The survey results allowed SDA and ASM to highlight the importance of cleaning one's hands as the single most important thing people can do to prevent the spread of germs and illness.
 
The results of the study are also featured in a new SDA/ASM educational brochure, Don't Get Caught Dirty-Handed, now available online.

This is the second year in a row SDA and Ogilvy PR were honored by PR News Non-Profit PR Awards.  SDA's 2006-2007 Report to the Membership won the Top Internal Publication Award in 2007.
