Carl J. Betz, founder of Toledo-based Betco Corp., died February 24 in Florida. He was 83.

Betz and his wife Ann founded Betco Corp. in 1950, after he earned his business degree from the University of Toledo. The janitor supply distributor quickly turned manufacturer with two products: Betco Concentrate all-purpose cleaner and Virox disinfecting toilet bowl cleaner. Today, the company is a leader in the jan/san market, manufacturing more than 400 chemical formulations and more than 50 floor care equipment models.

Betco has also been a member of ISSA since 1954, attaining ISSA Star 40 Status in 1998. Though Betz retired as CEO in 1990, he continued to attend the annual ISSA trade show and convention through last year.

Betz is survived by his wife, five children and 10 grandchildren.
