In a 5-0 vote, the Mission Viejo, Calif., City Council decided to require its contractors to check the immigration status of workers using a free federal online program, reports

The ordinance, which requires contractors to use the Department of Homeland Security's Basic Pilot program, also requires status checks on city employees and will take effect in July. The city uses contractors for landscaping, trash removal and street sweeping, and approved about 50 contracts in 2006.
