According to reports in the Boston Herald, the Boston Globe union members rallied to protest the outsourcing of janitor and maintenance jobs. The cuts were the result of declining circulation and a reduction in ad sales and resulted in 160 lost jobs.

According to the reports, most of the job cuts were achieved through buyouts, but the paper still let 70 full- and part-time workers go. The Globe plans to outsource these open positions to private companies.
