Encouraging Hand Hygiene In Offices
Property Manager, Karen Boyd, introduced The Healthy Workplace Project by Kimberly-Clark Professional as an initiative in Spring of 2011 in hopes it would help engage Denver West Office Park’s tenants and promote workplace wellness amongst the 5,000 employees working in the park. The Healthy Workplace Project has been installed in all 21 buildings, five of which are single tenant offices.
The Healthy Workplace Project is a comprehensive approach to hand hygiene that goes beyond the restroom, addressing germs in all the places that employees take them. The program is designed to help tenants engage and educate their employees and give them the tools necessary to maintain a healthy workplace. Encouraging employees to wipe, wash and sanitize inside the restroom (using soaps and towels) and outside the restroom (each employee receives a personal wellness care pack of hand sanitizers and surface wipes) helps decrease germ transmission.
Prior to installing The Healthy Workplace Project, Karen was already on track to promoting hand hygiene in the workplace. After concerns about pandemic flu a few years earlier, Karen implemented a hand washing poster campaign in restrooms and placed hand sanitizing stands in the lobby entrances. When she was introduced to The Healthy Workplace Project, Karen saw an opportunity to further establish Denver West Office Park’s commitment to hand hygiene in a more tangible way.
“The Healthy Workplace Project really enhanced what we were already doing,” says Karen. “It allows us to disseminate information to the tenants in a more user-friendly, attention getting way. The packets of information and educational materials make it easy. And, the fact that the wellness care packs come ready to go, simplifies the management of the program.”
In addition to the accessibility of the program, the look and feel of the products also caught Karen’s attention. For instance, she originally had another brand of hand sanitizing stands in the lobby of each building, but didn’t feel their industrial look went with the park’s overall esthetic.
