2011 Economic Outlook: In-House Facility Managers Weigh In

Loading the player ...

"Doing more with less" has been the long-time mantra for the in-house custodial manager. Staffs were often accustomed to picking up the slack as budget cuts and staff turnover plagued their departments. What they weren't necessarily prepared for was how a drastic economic downturn could trickle down to the custodial department, chipping away even further at budgets, cutting staff to record lows and demanding a reduction in cleaning frequencies.

Contrary to what many initially believed to be the case, the in-house jan/san market has been very much affected by this most recent recession. And although economists claim that the recession came to a close in 2009, custodial departments continue to struggle to get back to status quo. As these struggles continue, departments will be forced to think outside the box in terms of their custodial operations and processes.

Corinne Zudonyi, editor of Housekeeping Solutions magazine and CleanLink.com, recently took the opportunity to sit down with James Baio, Hartford Hospital, Sr. Martha Ann Reich, St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers, Valerie Reese, Country Club of Virginia, David Crowell, Saint Francis Medical Center and Alan Bigger, retired facilities director to get their take on the current state of the economy, how it has affected their department and where they plan to go from here.
