Wis. Green Cleaning Update

According to an article in The Journal Times, an amended version of a green cleaning bill was approved by the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources Wednesday, announced Rep. Cory Mason, D-Racine. The Green Cleaning for a Healthier Wisconsin bill would require schools and municipalities to review their cleaning products and processes for health impacts, said Mason, who authored the bill.

The bill was amended so schools and municipalities would have three years to comply and can choose to opt out if it would cost more, he said. Additionally, there would be no fees or fines because Mason said he believes people will see the benefits of a greener mode and make the changes on their own.

The amendments, Mason said, addressed some legitimate concerns while maintaining the integrity of the bill.

Local Republicans recently criticized Mason for writing the bill with help from former lawmaker Jeff Neubauer of Racine, because Neubauer's company, Kranz Inc., distributes such green cleaning products mentioned in the bill. But Mason said they received input from several groups in writing the bill.

The bill is now available to be scheduled to come before the full Assembly for a vote. Mason said he plans on asking for a vote to be scheduled soon.
