Waste Management Announces New Green Initiative
As seen in nthe Houston Business Journal.
Waste Management Inc. is rolling out an initiative over the next five years that will create an additional 60 renewable energy facilities in North America.
The Houston-based waste management company said the new facilities, combined with its nearly 300 current landfill gas-to-energy facilities, will generate more than 700 megawatts of clean renewable energy — enough to power 700,000 homes or replace more than eight million barrels of oil per year in North America.
Once the 60 facilities are online, the company said they will generate enough electricity to power about 230,000 homes.
Part of the program includes Waste Management bringing its four landfills in Ontario, Canada, and two landfills in Quebec, Canada, on line within the next five years.
Waste Management said it designed and operated its first such facility in the United States more than 20 years ago.
