Green Cleaning Bill Approved by Iowa House
Iowa schools would be required to at least consider using environmentally-friendly cleaning products under a bill that passed the Iowa House Monday.
Schools would have to, at minimum, conduct an assessment regarding environmentally preferable cleaning products. Any district that hasn’t opted out of the law would have to use the products beginning July 1, 2012.
The state enacted similar rules for state offices about two years ago and costs have not increased, advocates of the bill said. In addition to cleaner Iowa waterways, employee safety has improved, they say.
The bill, House File 823, passed in a 52 to 47 vote and now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
