Friendly Competition Highlights Waste/Recycling

Students at Purdue Univeristy, Indiana, have taken initial steps to bettering their environment. As of Sunday, students-run groups have ramped up education and awareness of waste management in an effort to promote recycling on campus. But their efforts were sparked only by environmental awareness, they are competing with other universities.

"This [program] is super important because of the economic benefits ... the environmental benefits," said Purdue senior Hollie Colony after picking up cardboard, plastic and other recyclable material that littered the seats of Mackey Arena following the women's basketball game on Sunday. "It's also important because we are a community, so what I do affects you and what you do affects me.

"We really have to raise awareness."

According to BoilerStation.com, Colony and her fellow Boilermakers are competing head-to-head with students from more than 500 other universities to see who can recycle the most in a 10-week competition called RecycleMania.

According to the event's Web site, RecycleMania is a competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs. The aim is to promote waste-reduction activities in campus communities.

Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data, which are then ranked based on the most recyclables collected per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita and who has the highest recycling rate.

The event runs from Sunday through March 27.

Carmen Martin, president of the Boiler Green Initiative, said more than 10 student organizations will participate in the event with the Boiler Green Initiative leading the charge during the first week.

"The two most important parts of the competition are reducing the amount of waste produced and education," she said. "Throughout the week, we are going to have events that give people the opportunity to learn about the importance of recycling and waste reduction."
