The swine flu has killed over 100 people in Mexico and recent confirmed cases in the U.S. have prompted jan/san departments to ramp up their cleaning procedures.
Starting with the airlines that travel to and from Mexico, US Airways officials comment that workers are going above and beyond normal cleaning measures to guarantee the safety of passengers, while maintaining normal flight schedules. In response to the swine flu cases, US Airways cleaning crews are giving airplane cabins — especially the lavatories — more thorough cleanings between flights, airline spokesman Michelle Mohr said. In addition, she said, flight attendants are frequently using hand sanitizer and wearing rubber gloves during beverage and meal service. Read more here.
In the Fort Wayne International Airport, jan/san crews are stepping up cleaning efforts to keep the virus at bay. Airport administrators have ordered janitorial staff to ramp up scouring and cleaning in public bathroom facilities and other parts of the airport with a heightened risk of germs spreading. Flight officials are also watching for passengers who display symptoms in an effort to minimize the spread. Read more here.
Finally, schools across the country are also paying close attention to cleaning as students in various states have displayed symptoms of the swine flu. One Texas school was closed by the State Health Department after three students were confirmed to have swine flu. Officials sought help from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and cleaners went to work on disinfecting desks, counter tops, doorknobs and floors in all 14 of the district schools.
