For commercial settings, the most common approach would be to follow the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance or LEED-EBOM. Many office buildings are achieving this certification so following these guidelines would be a good place to start. LEED covers chemicals, equipment, paper products, soap, waste management, pest control and matting.
For cleaning educational facilities, the Healthy Schools Campaign offers its “Quick and Easy Guide to Green Cleaning In Schools.” The guide outlines five steps to go green, including which chemicals, equipment and paper to buy as well how to use them.
Finally, for healthcare facilties, Practice Greenhealth, formerly known as Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, offers the “Ten Step Guide To Green Cleaning Implementation,” which covers purchasing recommendations of green chemicals, floor care products and soap.
