Waterless Urinals: Ending The Morning Ritual

Company Website

Three high schools in a district in the southeastern section of the United States wanted to end a morning ritual. Almost daily, the male students and teachers would open the doors to their restrooms and be confronted with what can only be described as a nasty stench.

It seems that the day or night before, the students would use the restrooms but forget to flush afterward. As soon as urine is mixed with water, odor problems begin. And during the course of the evening, bacteria and germs multiply, making the odor all the more offensive in the morning.

This is one — but certainly not the only — reason this district’s facility manager wanted to try waterless urinals. The district was also concerned about the large amounts of water being used for landscaping playgrounds and fields. After all, conservation is on everyone’s mind today.

Because waterless urinals stay dry, bacteria and odors do not have a chance to develop. With proper care and cleaning, similar to what is necessary for a conventional urinal, the waterless units stay odor free 24 hours a day.

As to conserving water, the district discovered selecting waterless urinals is one of the most significant steps they can take. Just one waterless urinal can save as much as 40,000 gallons of potable water annually.

But choosing a waterless urinal system took some time.

“There are about six manufacturers making waterless urinals,” said the district manager. “But one of them, Waterless Co., LLC, went out of their way to show me the many benefits of waterless urinals. They believe in their products, the concept, and that sold me on Waterless. That’s why we have just purchased 19 more.”
