Pest Control: Demand For Green Pest Control Rising Among Hospitals, Schools and Restraurants
Long Island businesses and public enterprises that prefer to avoid pesticides in the workplace but need to control pest problems finally have the option to go green. Arrow Exterminating announces that it has become certified in the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council)-endorsed Green Shield Certified program. Arrow is now certified to deliver environmentally friendly pest control services and has launched a green division, Arrow Ever-Green Services, to cater to this growing market. Arrow has been servicing all of Long Island and New York City since 1947.
Those commercial clients requesting green pest control include hospitals, school systems, restaurants, offices buildings and nursing homes, in addition to LEED certified green buildings, which need green pest control to comply with new green building standards. Pesticides are no longer the only way to rid buildings of unwanted pests. Green Shield Certified standards require pest control companies to first employ non-chemical methods to control pest problems. If pesticides are deemed necessary, then only those chemicals that have been screened and approved by Green Shield Certified will be utilized. To qualify for certification, companies must undergo an extensive on-site evaluation by an IPM (integrated pest management) professional. Green Shield Certified is operated by the IPM Institute of North America.
Arrow has been practicing green pest control long before eco-friendly products and services topped the global social consciousness. “It was always policy at Arrow to take the most environmentally sound approach to pest control. This was something my father practiced when he founded the company more than 60 years ago,” explained Jackie Grabin, Co-President of Arrow.
The green methods Arrow employs include use of bio-pesticides, which are derived from naturally occurring materials, such as animals, plants, bacteria and certain minerals. Green also means using mechanical, physical and cultural pest management tactics, such as improving environmental sanitation, pest proofing by sealing access holes, altering landscape practices around buildings to be less pest friendly and establishing a pest monitoring program to determine pest population pressures. The least toxic methods are always employed first.
Said Grabin, “For more than 100 years pest control was called exterminating. Our customers are often amazed at the strategies we first employ before we need to consider pesticides. The business sector is definitely ready for a green approach to pest control.”
